Brand Profile: NARS

L'amour Josie NARS Brand Profile
Over the next few months, I'll be publishing a series of introductory posts to some of my most-used high end and drugstore bands. This will include taking a look at the history behind these brands, and some of their best products.  To kick things off I'm starting with one of my favourites, NARS.

About The Brand:
NARS was founded in 1994 by (you guessed it) Francois Nars, a French makeup artist, graduate of the Carita makeup school in Paris, and photographer. The brand was born out of Nars' frustration with limited makeup lines. Initially launching as a collection of just twelve lipsticks sold in Barneys, New York, NARS has since grown to become an internationally available beauty brand producing high quality make-up, skin care and tools. In 2000 the company was bought by Shiseido. The black matte packaging is instantly recognisable and was designed by Fabien Baron.

What They Do Best:
It would probably be a little easier for me to list what they don't do best, because the answer is everything. Their eyeshadows and lip products are brilliant, however where NARS really shine is the base department. Their face products are awesome: Sheer Glow is one of my favourite foundations, pretty much everyone raves about their Creamy Concealer, Laguna is a HG bronzer of mine and their blushers kick butt. Amour is my favourite, but it wouldn't be a NARS post without a mention of the infamous and provocatively named Orgasm blush. A one-shade-suits-all job, I particularly like the illuminator version.

Where Should I Start?
With a cheek or lip product. Belle de Jour is my all time favourite lipstick, and NARS have a great range of sheer, matte, bold and natural lipsticks/tints/pencils. They're also pretty famous for their range of blushers/highlighters/bronzers which are all highly pigmented, finely milled and beautifully soft, so ask an assistant to match you up to a suitable shade.

Next On My To Buy List:
Base wise I'm going for another bottle of Sheer Glow which I love and am almost out of, a full sized version of their Pure Radiance Tinted Moisturiser which is one of the best TM's I've ever tried, and the Creamy Concealer which bloggers can't get enough of. NARS are my favourite brand for lipsticks, so I'm going to give a couple of their lip pencils a go in the shades Damned and (my all time favourite) Belle De Jour.

  1. Great post, can't wait to read and hear more about other brands. I've only ever owned the Orgasm blush from Nars, but so tempted to try their Sheer Glow foundation.

  2. Great post - I've had my eye on Nars for a long time, but not really known which products to start with. I think it's going to be either an eyeshadow primer or under eye concealer for me :o) Xx

  3. I have only Laguna bronzer, Deep Throat blush and the creamy concealer but I'm hooked on Nars! Too bad I have to order it from the UK so I can't try out the shades :/ That's why the concealer is too dark for me. If I had a chance to swatch I would love to buy the Sheer Glow foundation.

  5. Lovely post~ I adore NARS products. Not only are their packaging so luxurious and pretty, the product quality are really great! I think their blushes are the best with their very popular shade 'Orgasm' which has been mentioned so many times within the beauty world. I have yet got to try out the NARS sheer glow because i have heard so many raves about it and i know i'm missing out!

Thanks for sharing :) I just placed an order for my NARSissist palette~ wooo :)
    Have a lovely day! <3

  15. I have an unhealthy obsession with NARS and I live for their 'Multiple' products. I use the shade Portofino and it is the perfect, natural looking cream blush. Great Post!

  19. What a great post! Looking forward to reading what's next. I've trend the Sheer Glow but it just didn't work for me, I never went back to it after my first application. I so desperately want it to work! Maybe a different shade because I know the shade range is very limited! Oh and Laguna has been on my wish list for months now! I'm under strict orders to not buy it until I'm done with at least one Bronzer :'(
