Blogmas Day 17: The Christmas Day Red Lip

17 December 2013

Now that I've sussed out what's going on in the nail department over Christmas, it's time to talk lips. If there's only one day of the year that you reach for a red lipstick, December 25th should be that day. I can think of nothing more festive (beauty wise) than a perfect red pout. If - like me - you normally shy away from anything that doesn't fall in to the nude colour spectrum, don't panic. I've got you covered...

The Stains

Christmas is a day for chatting, kissing, filling your face and drinking a little too much fizz. You're going to want a lip colour that can take you from excitedly opening your presents at stupid AM through to the fourth bowl of Christmas pudding twelve hours later. With that in mind, stains are a great option for anyone who wants a fuss-free, doesn't budge, red lip. Hourglass' Opaque Rouge in Icon and Make Up For Ever Aqua Rouge #11 are two of my favourites. Yes, they take a bit of a prep work beforehand, but once applied they're two of the longest lasting lip products I own. Icon is more of a true Hollywood red, whilst the Make Up For Ever offering is a vampier berry shade for anyone who's feeling a little braver.

The Sticks

If you'd rather wear a traditional red lipstick, then look no further than MAC. I picked the shade Riri Woo based on longevity (this is a retro matte lipstick, so wears for a good few hours), but also because it's a beautiful true, rich red which I need to get more wear out of. Probably the easiest red lip to wear of this bunch is the final option, Revlon's Lip Butter in Red Velvet. This leans to the berry side of things and adds a sheer wash of colour which is soft enough for Church in the morning but can be built up throughout the day. While it might not stand up too well against a Christmas dinner with all of the trimmings, it's subtle enough to look good whilst fading.

Swatches L-R: Hourglass Icon, Make Up For Ever #11, MAC Riri Woo, Revlon Red Velvet.
