My Top Three High End Foundations

11 August 2013

 Chanel Vitalumiere Aqua in B20
Yves Saint Laurent Le Teint Touche Eclat in B30
 Nars Sheer Glow in Fiji

I will happily put my hands in the air and admit that I'm a little bit of a makeup snob. Yes, sometimes I probably am just paying through the nose for a brand name and some fancy packaging, but I love the feeling of making a high end purchase, and really enjoying using that product. Foundation is something that I've always struggled with, but I've finally managed to put together a little collection that will work for me regardless of how my skin is feeling on any given day. These three are my favourite high end picks from that set, and also my favourite foundations in general.

Chanel Vitalumiere Aqua was the first foundation that I really fell in love with. I bought it shortly after its release, and have repurchased it several times. Whilst I don't rate the original Vitalumiere too highly (I own it, but very rarely wear it), I absolutely adore this foundation, in particular its scent, which is a lovely floral smell - although some may find this overwhelming. The finish of this is a light-medium, satin coverage. I don't feel the need to powder at all with this, but my base looks healthy. I normally have okay skin, so one layer of this is plenty coverage for me, but it can be built up to give a more medium coverage. I can apply this at 8am, and my skin still looks nice when I get home at 6pm. It does contain SPF 15, but I haven't had any ghost face issues. One thing that I love about this foundation is how natural and easy to wear it is. It's a water based foundation, so has a gel like liquid texture. My freckles still show through on my nose, but any redness in my cheeks is evened out, and my skin looks balanced and happy. This also wins hands down for sensible packaging- it's plastic, so it's lightweight and doesn't risk smashing in a travel bag, and the squeeze neck is much easier to use than the pump or no pump scenario of the other two bottles.

YSL Le Teint Touche Eclat is the newest release of the trio, and also the sheerest of the bunch. I've been neglecting this lately as I'm rationing out my last few pumps, but it'll be making its way in to my next repurchases post, I'm sure. There was a lot of blogger hype around this when it was first released, so I won't bore you with all of the details, but I declared this my "favourite beauty release of the year" in my 2012 favourites, and not much has changed since. This is a very lightweight foundation that will leave you with glowing, healthy skin. It's not going to cover major imperfections, but if you want a dewy, light finish, give this a go. No powder is required - this has powder particles built in, to keep you looking glowy and fresh, but not sweaty. The lasting power of this is probably weakest of the three, but you'll get six hours out of it. This contains SPF 19, and has an extensive shade range.

I never thought I'd see the day where Nars Sheer Glow featured in any sort of favourites post, but I have to admit that I was so wrong about this foundation. This is a much fuller coverage finish than I'm used to, and will literally leave your skin looking airbrushed and flawless. I have no need for concealer when using this, and although this is quite a heavy coverage, your base doesn't look cakey either - it's definitely a satin finish. I find it ironic that this is called Sheer Glow actually, as it's neither of those things. One thing I will say about this foundation is that if you have quite dry skin, make sure you use a heavy duty moisturiser under this, as otherwise it will cling to dry patches. This foundation is perfect for events like weddings and nights out, because the lasting power is incredible, and it's also SPF free, so you get no flash back whatsoever.

I love all of these foundations for different reasons, but if I could only use one again it would probably be Vitalumiere Aqua or Sheer Glow - it changes depending on my mood, or the temperament of my skin!

  7. So many people rave about the Sheer Glow and I'm so tempted to try it. Even though I've heard so many people say that it's not anything like the name suggests, I'm still worried about how it would work on my oily, acne prone skin x
