Caring For My Bleached Hair

25 August 2013

Maintaining blonde hair is no easy deal. Although I can't claim to be an expert, I've been colouring my naturally dark hair various shades of light blonde (including a five year stretch of white blonde), since the age of thirteen - almost an entire decade! I've somehow - miraculously - managed to maintain a full head of hair, so I thought I'd share some of my tips with anyone else who's keen to keep blonde hair in tip top condition, whether it's natural or bleached.

The first, and probably most important tip I'd share with any new blondes, is to invest in a purple shampoo. Although it can look a little scary - it is very bright! - purple is the opposite to yellow on the colour spectrum, so it will help to even out any brassiness. My favourite purple shampoo is the Paul Mitchell platinum shampoo, which I've been using for five + years now, but a good budget alternative is the slightly less powerful Touch of Silver shampoo. Using purple shampoo every wash can lead to hair becoming a little grey, so I'd recommend alternating with your favourite shampoo, and using a clarifying shampoo occasionally also - Phytoneutre is my favourite.

Because bleach can leave hair dry and damaged, moisture is a must when it comes to maintaining healthy locks. I've tried conditioners from pretty much every brand (Ojon, Aveda, Sexy Hair, Toni & Guy, Redken, the list goes on), but this Bumble & Bumble offering is my current favourite. It's light enough that it doesn't weigh my hair down, but also moisturising enough to leave my hair feeling silky. Protein treatments are also great for strong hair. I love Philip Kingsley's Elasticizer and Bumble & Bumble's Deeep treatment, but another favourite for winter in particular is the Joico K-Pak Reconstructor. It smells of bananas - delicious, trust me - and my hair always feels healthy and happy after use.

After washing my hair, I like to finish off with an oil of some form. I liked Moroccan oil, but Macadamia is definitely my favourite. Not only does it keep moisture locked in to my hair, it also speeds up drying time, which is a bonus. Ojon's offering is next on my to try list. My final piece of advice for caring for bleached hair, would be to be careful of which brushes you use on your hair. Bleached hair is stripped and weak, so prone to snapping. For this reason I use a super gentle Tangle Teezer on my wet hair, and a Denman Paddle Brush the remainder of the time. Neither of these brushes pulls too harshly on the hair, meaning I experience less breakage.

Are there any tips for dealing with blonde hair that I need to know about? What are your favourite hare care products?

  1. I just recently re-bleached my hair (after about a two year hiatus from being bleached) so it's good to refresh on newer products available to use! Thanks!

  8. My hair isn't dyed blonde, but it has been quite damaged before.. I already love the Macadamia treatment for when I need a good pick-me-up for my hair & I have been eyeing the B&B Coconut conditioner for a while now.. As far as other great products I can suggest for more damaged hair.. I've been really loving the REDKEN extreme anti-snap for when I use heat.

  9. Although I have red hair I have to bleach it to get it this colour so finding new products to try on really damaged hair is definitely something I love. Awesome post :)x
