Products I Didn't Love #1

5 February 2013

Essie Fiji - £7.99

The beginning of a new month equals a flood of favourite posts in blogger land. In my 2012 favourites, I promised to include monthly offerings, but nothing really stood out for me in the month of January. So instead, I've decided to put together a quick roundup of products that for me, just didn't work out.

It's very unlike me to post a 'not so good' review, in fact I can only recall one such post. Nine times out of ten, if I don't love something, I'll pass it on to one of my sisters or a friend. However, these products are ones that I so badly wanted to work for me, I held on to them. Please note, that this is just personal taste, and doesn't reflect on the brand as a whole - in fact, I really rate other products from each of these brands!

Bourjois Healthy Mix Serum - I'm a big lover of the original formula of this foundation (it's one of my favourites), but this just didn't work for me. The colour and coverage were fine, but it didn't give me the same glow that the original healthy mix does, plus I think this contributed to a pretty big breakout.

Laura Mercier Brow Pencil - The Laura Mercier brow Powder Duo is my go to for great brows, and featured in my 2012 favourites. This however, just didn't cut the mustard. It feels heavy and fake, and the colour match isn't nearly as great for me as the duo.

Soap & Glory Thick & Fast Mascara - This just doesn't work for me. My lashes look clumpy and 'glued' in to place, and I prefer a more natural look. I do love the Soap & Glory plumping lip glosses though, and I'd definitely try more from their makeup line.

Real Techniques Blush brush - I adore Real Techniques brushes, and after hearing many a rave review on this I eagerly made a purchase. Unfortunately, it sits neglected most of the time - I much prefer my MAC 187 or 168. I have a pretty small face and this just isn't precise enough for me.

Essie Fiji Polish - This was one of 2012's most hyped up polishes, but I just can't get on with it. It takes at least three coats to look opaque on me, doesn't dry quickly, and feels like more effort to apply than it's worth. I'm not the biggest Essie fan (beauty blogging heresy), but I do really like mint candy apple.

  1. Tis funny how what people love to much, others just don't! Like the real techniques blush brush, I personally love it... although to be fair, I don't really have any experience with any other blush brushes, so maybe I should give others a try as well! And you've reminded me that I still need to get the mint candy apple from Essie! x

  2. I'm the same with Essie polishes, some apply better than fiji (you don't need lots of coats) but they chip so easily. I do love MCA too though!

  3. I agree with the RT brush, I find mine is too big and only tend to use it if I have a very pigmented blusher that needs a light hand.
Totally agree with the Soap and Glory mascara, it does absolutely nothing for me. It also makes my lashes really sticky and my top and bottom lashes end up sticking together, really annoying!
I also LOVE figi as a colour but it is kind of annoying having to put on 3 coats. I love posts like this and feel like everything you have said has been justified :)

  4. I also hate that mascara! And the blush brush doesn't work great for me either, thought I was the only one! I have the same problems with Fiji too, such a shame! xx

  5. I also tried the S&G mascara and I too didn't think much of it! I'm using it because I'm not wasteful but don't think it was the greatest mascara.

    Following you :)

  10. Thanks for this post! I always find them really helpful! I have tried both the Bourjois foundations...and can't remember which one I preferred, but I think I liked how the original one lasted on my skin.

As for the Essie Fiji. I agree. I haven't tried the version sold at Boots with the better brush than the original Essie bottles....but would like that to be better. The original bottles of this shade with the skinny brushes--no. I hate the way it applies.

  12. Oh no, sorry to hear these were disappointments. Especially the Bourjois foundation and Real Techniques blush brush because they are two of my favourites :p I also had my eye on Fiji but passed on it - I bought Revlon Pale Cashmere which I thought was similar.

  14. HEY! It's really interesting to read a post that tells you what products to stay away from. I tried the soap and glory shampoo and conditioner the other day and it's so good. I was going to buy their mascara the other day too, so maybe it's a good job I didn't - plus I saved money right? haha
Would love it if we followed each other, so let me know on my blog?

  19. It's funny how some things work so well for some and not others. I can't say I've ever tried any of these, so can't comment, but I've certainly felt that way about some of the products I've bought too.
I can already tell that I wouldn't get on with Essie Fiji - it's such a pretty colour, but a bit too pale for me, and I really don't have the patience for streaky nail polishes or having to do three coats - it's a wonder if I can sit still long enough for one to dry and not smudge it! Ha.
    Hope you're well lovely.

  24. It's interesting to see how some things work for some people but not for others. I love the Soap & Glory mascara, Essie Fiji and the Real Techniques blush brush but I'm not a fan of the expert face brush.

  25. FINALLY someone other than me who doesn't "get" some of the hype surrounding certain products! I feel like everyone in only beauty community gets all excited over products and everyone else buys into it and before you know it, better products ar being forgotten about 'cause all everyone talks about are the not-so-hot products!

  26. For the longest time I loved Essie nail polishes and wore nothing but Essie. At some point it dawned on me slowly that they actually weren't that great. I think it was when I spent 11.99 for a limited edition polish, Camera. The colour was so pretty in the bottle and it took four coats to get it opaque! It didn't dry fast at all and the formula was odd. After that experience, I think, I started noticing the negatives to Essie polishes.
